Enabling a Smart & fully-automated Port

Over the years there has been a surge in the implementation of technological port solutions so that container operators can improve productivity. However, very few ports have implemented a comprehensive long-term plan, aiming to transform the available infrastructure into a fully automated port.

Fully automated systems can help port operations better deal with the massive growth of container volumes by reducing on-going/operational costs, enhancing productivity and improving safety and reliability.

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are extensively used in the maritime industry and are one of the most innovative components of a fully automated port. AGVs are fully automated, unmanned container transport vehicles that are used to horizontally transport containers between the quayside and the container yard.  The autonomic navigation and self-monitoring capabilities make AGVs the perfect solution for container transport. By replacing yard tractors and eliminating the need for a labor force to drive the tractors, AGVs are creating a rapid, economical and safer container transport system within the port.

To operate in-motion, battery-operated vehicles (e.g., AGVs), communications between vehicles and the port operation center as well as vehicles and their environment, should run on a reliable wireless network. Data (e.g., control & monitoring signals) should be transmitted seamlessly, without loss, latency and/or jitter in the harsh port environment.

The requirement for real-time, ultra-reliable and stable connectivity is enabled using wireless broadband that can support high data throughput from/to a large number AGVs working simultaneously and/or moving cranes (e.g., rail cranes/ tire cranes).

RADWIN’s FiberinMotion® mobility solution offers powerful, easy to deploy base stations that guarantee high capacity connectivity to ruggedized mobile units mounted on vehicles and other mobile port facilities (e.g., AGVs, cranes). FiberinMotion is an affordable Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) solution that ideally meets the needs of port mobility applications.
